Application examples by industry
Food & agriculture
Typical samples: grains, flour, milk powder, spices, herbs, nuts, dried fruit, animal feed, silage.
Use: incoming goods, recipe control, quality assurance in production & development.
Recommendation: DBS 60-3 (fast, stable, with memory & programs) or DLB (intuitive step-by-step guidance).
Plastics & chemicals
Typical samples: plastic granules, pigments, toners, resins.
Use: residual moisture before extrusion/injection molding, incoming goods, process control.
Recommendation: DBS 60-3 (fine switch-off criteria, step/rapid/gentle drying profiles) or DAB (robust, quick tests).
Pharmaceuticals & cosmetics
Typical samples: creams, pastes, soaps, detergents, plant extracts.
Use: development & quality control testing, batch documentation.
Recommendation: DBS 60-3 (GLP-compliant documentation, 10 drying programs, 100 memory slots, single-cell weighing system) or DLB (multilingual guidance, auto-tare when closing the lid) for reproducible workflows.
Energy, environment & water management
Typical samples: sewage sludge, biomass, filter cake, environmental samples.
Use: determination of dry matter/moisture content, reporting.
Recommendation: DBS (extended memory & protocols) or DAB (simple, quick tests).
Construction materials, ceramics & powder metallurgy
Typical samples: gypsum, clay, ceramic powders, metal powders.
Use: process release, powder handling, sintering/drying processes.
Recommendation: DBS 60-3 (step drying & freely selectable switch-off criteria).
Easy data transfer
For convenient communication between moisture analyzer and printer or PC, several interfaces are available, e.g. USB, RS-232 or optional Ethernet. Devices include internal memory for storing drying parameters such as duration, temperature, display settings and switch-off criteria. This saves time and ensures reproducible results. Compatible printers and interface cables are available as accessories. For transferring results to a PC, we recommend the KERN BalanceConnection SCD 4.0 software, which also supports GLP-compliant documentation and Excel/Access integration.

Option DAkkS Calibration Certificate | Mass 963-127
Option Factory Calibration Certificate | Temperature 964-305

How does a moisture analyzer work?

A Moisture Analyser (also known as Moisture Balances) determines the amount of moisture in a product. This moisture content is directly responsible for the effective life and quality of the product being analysed.

The Moisture Analyser weighs a sample of the product, heats it up and once it is dry, weighs it again. This weight after drying is subtracted from the first weight. The result indicates the loss of moisture as a loss of mass.

Moisture Analyzers & Residual Moisture Meters from KERN – precise moisture determination for laboratories & industry

KERN moisture analyzers (also known as residual moisture meters or moisture balances) deliver fast and reproducible results in laboratories, quality assurance and production – from food and plastics to environmental samples and raw materials. Thanks to modern halogen technology, heating ranges from 35–200 °C, freely selectable drying profiles and user-friendly operation, they are versatile tools for precise moisture content analysis.
Halogen moisture analyzers for fast and reliable results
Our moisture analyzers work according to the thermogravimetric principle: the initial weight of the sample is recorded, a halogen heating element dries the sample while the integrated balance continuously measures the weight. The loss in weight is automatically calculated as the moisture content.
Key benefits of KERN halogen moisture analyzers:
    • Uniform sample heating without risk of burning
    • Fast amortization thanks to low acquisition costs
    • Temperature range from 35 to 200 °C
    • Precise results with freely selectable heating profiles and switch-off criteria – significantly more efficient than conventional drying oven methods
    Drying programs
Depending on the model, our moisture analyzers offer different heating profiles so that the method can be optimally adapted to the sample:
    • Standard drying – suitable for most types of samples
    • Rapid drying – ideal for samples with high moisture content
    • Gentle drying – prevents decomposition and skin formation for sensitive substances
    • Step drying – temperature and duration of heating can be freely set; enables selective moisture determination at different temperatures
